Magnitude 6.5 (mww) was reported for this earthquake.

Reported depth: 492.4 km (deep, 300 km or more).

The epicentre was 861 km SSE of Nagoya, Japan.

USGS significance score: 650. USGS calculates this number from magnitude, maximum intensity, felt reports and estimated impact; it is not a risk rating.

No felt reports or intensity data have been published for this event.

General information: magnitude measures the energy released at the source on a logarithmic scale — each whole number is roughly 32 times more energy. Depth is how far below the surface the rupture began. Whether an earthquake is felt, and how strongly, depends on many factors and is best shown by felt reports and intensity data.

Regional background: Japan

General information about earthquakes in this region. It is not a measurement or assessment of this earthquake.

Japan is one of the most seismically active countries on Earth because four tectonic plates meet beneath and around the islands: the Pacific, Philippine Sea, Eurasian and North American plates. The Pacific plate dives westwards beneath northern Japan at the Japan Trench, while the Philippine Sea plate subducts beneath south-west Japan at the Nankai Trough and the Sagami Trough.

Japanese earthquakes span the full depth range. Crustal quakes on inland faults are usually shallower than 20 km; megathrust events on the offshore trenches commonly start between about 10 and 50 km; and earthquakes inside the subducting Pacific slab occur at intermediate depths and, beneath the Sea of Japan and the Izu–Bonin arc, deeper than 300 km.

Official monitoring: Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), NIED.

Location

The epicentre was located at 27.7953 latitude and 139.6184 longitude, near Bonin Islands, Japan region. The earthquake was deep at 492.4 km depth.
