Mexico sits where the Cocos, Pacific and North American plates collide along the Middle America Trench, producing frequent large quakes. The 1985 Mexico City earthquake (M8.0) and the 2017 Puebla earthquake (M7.1) caused massive damage to the capital, which sits on a former lake bed that amplifies shaking.
