Earthquake Activity Around the World
Earthquakes happen somewhere in the world every day. The vast majority are small, recorded only by seismic instruments, and never felt by anyone on the surface.
Magnitude describes the size of an earthquake — the energy released at its source — on a logarithmic scale, so each step up represents a substantially stronger event. Depth describes how far below the Earth’s surface the earthquake started; shallow earthquakes are more likely to be felt than very deep ones of the same magnitude.
Most seismic activity is concentrated along tectonic plate boundaries, where sections of the Earth’s crust push together, pull apart, or grind past one another. The Pacific Ring of Fire, circling the Pacific Ocean through Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Chile and Alaska, is the most seismically active region on Earth.
